3 Questions for Director and Assoc. Professor Rebecca Holderness

1. From your perspective (national forefront of directing/creating new work) what excites you about the changing face of theatre today?
I am excited by the diversity of the work I see around the world. All kinds of integration of performance techniques and performers, arts and community are being conceived and created and presented. Things that we thought of as Avant Garde are now being integrated into commercial theater - immersive theater, types of cross discipline work and cross media interactions. Art Music and Theater worlds flow more and more into each other.

I am also finding that theater cities outside of New York City are taking care to preserve the diversity of their performance communities even while resources get tighter. Where gentrification has pushed artist communities away ( such as NYC) other "blighted" cites are opening their doors, such Pittsburgh and Detroit. I am observing a new "regional" theater growing which is less "regional" and more  global while still adhering to ideas about the importance of place.

2. What cool things do you see your students doing that inspires you?
My students inspire me with their ability to take in new ideas and then poof! make personal art with them. I am inspired by their lack of cynicism in a time where they might well be bitter. I think this new world is amazing in how much it embraces community without as many labels. And I think much of our current unrest is a reaction to an emerging generation that defines race, gender and family in new ways.

3. Name one thing you're up to right now that  might surprise people.
I am developing planning and funding for a community pop up to work along side and with The Fondy Farmer's Market on Fond du Lac. We hope to fill a vacant lot with events that look at food nutrition farming and culture. So in support of that I want to work this summer on a Food Truck, is that surprising?
